The City of Gig Harbor Department of Community Development is soliciting interest from consultants to assist the City in developing an Urban Forestry Program. The City has experienced a tremendous amount of residential growth in the last ten years, and while the City is pleased to see progress toward its urban growth goals, this development boom has resulted in a 15% increase in hard surface area in the last five years, with an associated loss in urban tree canopy. The City Council has prioritized an Urban Forest Management Plan and an update to tree retention policies in the Two-Year Strategic Plan (2022-2023). To further these goals, the City has received a Community Forestry Assistance Grant through the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR); and the agreement will be for the granting period of July 1, 2022 through May 31, 2023.
